The beginning of the Firehawk can be traced to its roots at Street Legal
Performance (SLP) in Ste. Therese and LaSalle, Quebec, Canada. SLP was started
by ex-drag racer Ed Hamburger in 1987 when he negotiated a deal with GM to
design and fit a performance package for the Pontiac Firebird, which became
known as the SLP "Firehawk". The Firehawk was an OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacture) factory performance option of the Pontiac Firebird.
Essentially, this was a hot-rod option that came with GM certification and
backed by a factory warranty.
The Firebird Firehawks made by SLP Engineering spanned from 1991 through 2002.
The first test cars were built in 1991, and then limited production was
available to the public in 1992. Between 1993-1997 all Firehawks were
based off of the Formula body style. From 1999-2002 the Trans Am body
style joined the Formula body style as an option to become a numbered Firehawk.
It was available on hard-top or t-top models from 1993-2002, with convertibles
returning to the linup in 1995. There were no Firehawks produced in 1998 due to
a the Firebird styling change and a manufacturing issue with SLP.
Year by year productions numbers and other
details
The 91-92 Hawks were the only 3rd Generation Firebird Firehawks and received
very special treatment from SLP. 1-8 were late 1991, 9-27 were 1992 (numbers 18
and 23 were not built). They started out as an automatic transmission 350
Formula with the 1LE and WS6 suspension options as well as the ALL important
RPOB4U code. The B4U code signified that it was to be a Firehawk. They got a
4-bolt main Heavy Duty SLP 350 motor, Borg-Warner T-56 Six-Speed Transmission,
Dana 44 rear axle, aluminum heads, pistons, and exhaust with SLP headers and
much more! The computers were worked over as well as virtually every other part
of the car. Ronal wheels (1991-1994), suspension and in some cases interiors
were installed as well. The horsepower was rated at 360 and had 390ft.lbs of
torque. 11 buyers chose to order the Competition package. The interior
commemorative plaque listed the build number.
All of the Firehawks were to be red but there were some exceptions. Number 24
Dark Green Metallic, number 25 Arctic White, number 26 Dark "Jade" Green
Metallic, and One Bright Blue Metallic. They were all to be Formula
Hardtops also but of course there were two exceptions. The last 3rd generation
Firehawk built was number 27 and it was a red Convertible Trans Am with the
competition Option. Car number 25 was the only other body exception and it
was a White T-top version.
The last 3 built had aluminum rodeck blocks. Two of them were 366ci, and
number 26 came from SLP with a 366 ci/T-ram setup but the buyer wasn't happy
with its performance so SLP sent the 366 back and had rodeck sent a 383 and the
T-ram that was causing alot of tuning issues was pulled to make way for a TPIS
Mini-ram intake. Car number 26 is by far the most powerful stock Firehawk
ever built by SLP, producing well over 400 horsepower.
1991/1992 Details
In 1992 the Firehawk option required the B4U RPO code from GM and was only
available on the Formula model. The Firehawk package increased the horsepower
from the stock bhp to 350 bhp and the stock torque was increased from stock
ft-lbs. to 390 ft-lbs. All of the above options where covered under a 12 month
or 12,000 mile warranty from SLP and the dealer would work with SLP for warranty
claims.
The Firehawk base package, including the car, had a MSRP of $39,995.00 and
included:
Engine:
4-bolt main cylinder block
1053 alloy forged steel "Pink" rods
Lightweight high silicon cast aluminum pistons
Steel bullet hydraulic roller camshaft

Simpson 5-point seat belt harnesses for $175 each
Competition package option that had a MSRP of $9,995 and included:
4 - Piston Brembo/F-40 front brake calipers (identical to that of the
Ferrari F40)
In 1993 the Firehawk changed quite a bit, as did the entire Firebird line.
Some of the reasons for the changes were price, time to build, and demand.
Rather than having all of the major components replaced by SLP Engineering, they
decided to add some smaller upgrades including unique a lightweight composite
hood, special wheels, stainless steel exhaust tips, and a graphics package.
These cars could be built at a much faster rate with less cost and work
involved.
The 1993 Firehawk received the SLP package with a functional cold air induction
hood scoop, Ronal aluminum alloy wheels, and stainless steel exhaust tips.
The LT1 in the Formula and Trans Am was very similar to the one in the Corvette
C4, except with 2-bolt mains and a more restrictive intake/exhaust system.
1993 Details
In 1993 GM changed to the 4th generation Firebird and SLP changed the Firehawk
package to make it a little more economical. The Firehawk package was
available for the formula hard-top or t-top models and required the R6V RPO
code. It came as a OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) option which was

This was the last year that the interior commemorative plaque listed the build
